Mike Chastain, who became Jones County’s all-time winningest football coach last season, and Chad Alligood, the school’s athletic director, confirmed Monday that they resigned Friday.

Their decisions came less than two weeks after a board of education meeting at which some parents and football team booster expressed displeasure with Chastain.

Chastain’s Jones County teams were 56-20 in six seasons and 10-2 in 2024.

According to The Jones County News, critics at a Jan. 23 board meeting brought up Chastain’s unrelated decisions to fire a longtime assistant coach and to contract with an out-of-state vendor for team uniforms and equipment.

Chastain said he felt his character was attacked at the meeting, the newspaper reported. Alligood and principal Dennis Woolfolk supported Chastain at the meeting.

Chastain and Alligood declined to comment for this story.

Chastain came to Jones County in 2019 after leading Warner Robins to consecutive Class 5A finals appearances. His first three Jones County teams won region titles, and the first two reached Class 5A semifinals. Chastain’s career record is 85-32.

Chastain previously was the offensive coordinator at Houston County when future Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm became one of the state’s all-time leading passers.
