Falcons coach Mike Smith will be the featured guest speaker next week at the University of Georgia spring coaching clinic.
Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour and former NFL kicker Kevin Butler (both former Georgia players) also will lecture, along with several head coaches of Georgia's high school state championship teams, including Chattahoochee's Terry Crowder, Brookwood's Mark Crews, and Buford's Jess Simpson.

-- St. Pius' Shelby Ashe set a new national high school record with a weight throw of 20.79 meters at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. Ashe is the country's only high school girl to throw beyond 20 meters this year. She did it three times at the New York meet, with the record-breaking throw shattering her own previous mark of 19.93 meters from March 2010.
-- Holy Innocents' O'Neal Wanliss, who recently signed a track scholarship with North Carolina, set a school and personal record after winning the 800 meters at the GAC Invitational with a time of 1:57.00. Wanliss is the two-time defending Class A championship in the 400 meters.
Baseball
Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky will throw out the first pitch for Centennial's home game against Roswell on Friday. Dravecky battled cancer and eventually had his left arm amputated. Dravecky runs a nonprofit organization called Endurance, which offers help to those who are facing serious illness, loss or depression.
Gymnastics
Former Providence Christian standout Michelle Shealy of Iowa State was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. The freshman from Snellville had the team's top score on the balance beam with a 9.900, while also winning seven event titles during the season. Two years ago, Shealy scored a perfect "10″ on the floor exercises for Providence Christian at the state championship meet.
Basketball
Rockdale County guard Kevin Ware confirmed Wednesday that he still hasn't heard back from Tennessee about his request for a release from his basketball scholarship because of the firing of Volunteers coach Bruce Pearl. Ware's father has left a couple of messages for Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton.

More than 12,000 girls between the ages of 10-18 will compete in the Big South Volleyball Tournament from April 1-3 at the Georgia World Congress Center. USA Volleyball has designated this event as a ranking tournament and is one of nine qualifiers for the Junior Olympics. ... The Fayette County High School Hall of Fame has inducted six new members, including wrestling coach Jim Bailey, former Georgia Tech football player Jeff Murchison and former soccer players Jaime Corn Holland and John Davis. ... Fayette County linebacker Jonathan Seldon signed a football scholarship with Miles College.
