Jordan Spieth
35-33-68
Spieth didn’t know that his birdie putt on No. 18 had given him a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Tour Championship. He didn’t find out until 20 minutes after his round. The 20-footer capped a 2-under day and put Spieth in the driver’s seat. “In my mind I just needed to make the putt to get one more clear of everyone else and to shoot 68 versus 69.” Spieth had three birdies and just one bogey — on the par-3 No. 6. It was only the second bogey Spieth has recorded during the tournament that featured several par saves despite nasty conditions the past two rounds.
Henrik Stenson
35-37-72
Stenson finally faltered, especially late in the third round, with three bogeys on the back nine. Stenson bogeyed No. 17 from the right greenside bunker, opening the door for Spieth to take the lead on No. 18. The bunker shot left Stenson with a 30-footer for par. He missed. “None,” Stenson said when asked of his options from the bunker. “I think that I did as good as I could, unless you want to start playing Hollywood shots. That wasn’t the time for it.” Stenson called the approach shot that landed in the bunker “one of the disappointing shots of the day, and I paid for it.”
Rickie Fowler
36-31-67
Fowler finished with the low round of the day with a four-birdie back nine. He sank a 15-foot birdie putt from above the hole on No. 18 to finish the round and move into third place going into Sunday’s final round. After birdies at Nos. 11 and 12, Fowler just missed birdies on the next two holes — lipping out on No. 13 and nearly chipping in on No. 14. “I gave myself a lot of good looks on the back nine.” Fowler is one of the five who can win the FedEx Cup title with a victory at the tour championship and enters the final round four strokes off the lead.
