Kennesaw State’s Jimmy Beck decided not to lap the U.S. Amateur field Tuesday. Maybe save a few shots for match play.
Beck backed up his Monday 6 under, which tied for the day’s low score, with “only” a 1-over 73 on the Highlands Course Tuesday. He still was looking at a very favorable seeding going into the beginning of match play Wednesday.
He arrived at the Atlanta Athletic Club Tuesday morning in a most relaxed state of mind. “There was really no pressure,” he said. “Once you shoot a number like (6-under), you’re just trying to get to match play form there. It’s just make it to the next round. It was kind of relaxing, I guess, in a sense that I didn’t have to come out here and try to shoot a low number again.”
The advantages of being a high seed are, however, a bit nebulous. The relaxation ended with Tuesday’s round.
“Any guy who makes it in match play here is going to have a shot to win, I think,” Beck said.
