Chugging along

Jason Day, ranked No. 12 in the world, had a less-than-stellar second golf shot on the opening hole in the first round of the 82nd Masters at Augusta National Golf Club on Thursday.

His shot hit a tree, bounced off a fan and into his beer cup. After he chugged the beer, the fan gave the ball back to Day.

“Thanks, mate,” Day replied. He eventually shot a 3-over 75.

Dogs and Jackets

Former Georgia and Georgia Tech golfers kept themselves within reach after one round with good back-nine performances.

For Georgia Tech, Matt Kuchar made five birdies during a back-nine 31 and put himself strongly in contention with a 68. Former champ Larry Mize was at 76. A year ago, Kuchar was one of four golfers to finish in the top 25 in all four majors.

For Georgia, Kevin Kisner shot an even-par 72 despite a bogey on No. 18, and two-time champ Bubba Watson, Brian Harman and Russell Henley all had good comebacks to shoot 73s. Henley shot a 33 on the final nine holes. Harman was 4 over after seven holes with two double bogeys.

Tiger trap

Tiger Woods shot a 1-over 73 with four bogeys and two pars Thursday on his six toughest career holes at Augusta National (aggregate relation to par) in 79 rounds.

Numerology

13

Defending champion Sergio Garcia’s score on the 15th hole, matching the highest score ever on a Masters hole. Tom Weiskopf had a 13 on No. 12 in 1980 and Tommy Nakajima had a 13 on No. 13 in 1978. Garcia shot an 81.

He said it

"Nothing, nothing can prepare you for that moment. Doesn't matter who it is, what anyone has told you, I had plenty of time to prepare, nothing compares to that feeling of being on that (first) tee. … It's days like today where I had a poor round and I'm disappointed, but I also know that I've learned so much from that. And until you're in that position you'll never know how you'll react. Today I was pretty nervous, I'm not going to lie, but I also was very excited as well." – Harry Ellis, of Florida State, who is in the field as the English Amateur champ, after his round of 14-over-par 86.
