Friends of Louise Suggs will break ground Saturday on a monument in Austell that will commemorate the life of the pioneer of women's golf.
The monument will be on the site of what used to be the first tee of the old Lithia Springs Golf Course, which was closed around 1975. The nine-hole course was built by Suggs' grandfather in 1932 and she played many rounds there until the family moved to Carrollton.
Suggs, 87, who currently lives in Florida, will attend the ground breaking ceremony, along with a representative of the LPGA Tour, which she helped create. She won 58 LPGA events and 11 major championships before retiring from competition in 1962.
The event will be at the Lithia Springs Mineral Water offices at 2910 Veterans Memorial Highway in Austell. For information about the event, call (678) 895-0204. ...
