The Georgia Tech volleyball team’s early-season surge continued Thursday night against a top-10 opponent before a sellout home crowd. The No. 5 Yellow Jackets needed but three sets to take care of No. 10 BYU, winning 25-20, 25-21, 25-14 in a sold-out O’Keefe Gymnasium.

Tech improved to 6-0 and earned its second win of the season over a ranked opponent, following its sweep of then-No. 17 Illinois in a neutral-site match. The BYU match was part of the Georgia Tech Classic, which also includes the Jackets’ Sunday afternoon match vs. No. 8 Ohio State.

That game also has been sold out for the 1,200-seat gym. The two games are part of a loaded non-conference schedule that coach Michelle Collier assembled, with five out of nine opponents having played in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

On Thursday, outside hitter Julia Bergmann led the Jackets with 20 kills, eight digs, two blocks and two aces. Through Tuesday’s results, the reigning ACC player of the year ranked first in Division I in points per set and third in kills per set. Outside hitter Tamara Otene contributed eight kills and nine digs and setter Bella D’Amico had 25 assists.

BYU, which fell to 5-2, plays Ohio State on Friday night at O’Keefe.
