Falcons running back Steven Jackson, 31, is trying to defy time again.

Running backs’ production has historically dipped after they hit age 30.

Jackson has not been an exception, as last season his left hamstring gave way and his string of eight consecutive 1,000-yard seasons ended.

But that hasn’t stopped the Falcons from counting on Jackson to have a flashback and help provide a jump-start to the rushing attack, which makes him the X-factor for the season opener.

He missed all of the exhibition season with a right hamstring injury. The Falcons have declared him healthy and ready to play.

“Steven knows his body,” offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said. “He’s been doing this long enough. He knows what he has to do.”

The Falcons believe Jackson, unlike Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, Eddie George and a host of others, can be productive post-30.

“All you have to do is take one good look at him to know that he’s in good shape,” Koetter said. “He looked fast (in practice). He’s got fresh legs. Steven is a player. I know that he will be ready.”

With Jackson expected to carry the load, the Falcons finished last in rushing (77.9 yards per game) last season.

“I will go into this game on Sunday healthy,” Jackson said.

But can he produce on with his play limited?

“I think it depends on how the game plays out,” Jackson said. “We are going to be aggressive, and we are going to be balanced.”

Jackson won’t have to shoulder the entire load. Backups Jacquizz Rodgers and Antone Smith also will play. Rookie Devonta Freeman is ready for spot duty until he improves in pass protection.
