New Falcon Winborn impressed with team
Southeastern Conference fans are likely familiar with the newest Atlanta Falcon - linebacker Jamie Winborn.
He's sort of a rarity - a long-time NFL player from Vanderbilt. On the eve of training camp, the Falcons signed Winborn and released linebacker Rashad Bobino to make room for him on the roster.
Winborn, who has also played with Denver, San Francisco, Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, joined Falcons beat writer D. Orlando Ledbetter for a quick Q&A after Monday's second practice.
Q: Why did you sign with the Falcons?
A: Last year I was impressed by this team. I felt like this team has a great chance of taking it all the way. That was a big factor in me coming here.
Q: Where were you playing in Denver, weak or strong (linebacker)?
A: I was playing some strongside backer there. I also played middle linebacker and (weakside) linebacker in nickel coverage. That's primarily were I was playing.
Q: Have the Falcons talked to you about how you are going to used? About what opportunities that might be here for you?
A: Not really. It's just really an opportunity to compete and maybe play on special teams. We really haven't gotten into what I'd be doing as far as playing or anything like that. I'm really not concerned about that right now. I just need to get in and learn the system and help the team win.
Q: Now, exactly where is Wetumpka, Alabama, your hometown?
A: It's mid-South Alabama. Right below Birmingham, but before you get to Montgomery.
Q: What are three things people might not know about Wetumpka?
A: It's a great city. We just got a casino. That's one good thing. We've got good football going on down there and we generally have good weather.
Q: How did you end up at Vanderbilt?
A: I had a couple of offers from some other good teams. But when Vanderbilt came into the picture, I really looked at it from an academic standpoint rather than athletics. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to go to such a great school. That's pretty much what I based by decision on.
