Mark Richt reiterated at UGA’s Media Day on Tuesday what he told callers on his radio show Monday night: He might consider playing one of Georgia’s backup quarterbacks in addition to Hutson Mason.

“I’ve done it over the years,” the Bulldogs’ coach said. “I was used to doing it at Florida State and then when I got here we did it with ‘Shock’ (D.J. Shockley) because that’s kind of what I was used to doing. (David) Greene was playing and the second team guy was getting a little work, so I was kind of used to it. But over time I don’t think Mike (Bobo, Georgia’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach) felt quite as strong about it so we kind of got away from it. But it’s not a bad thing to do.”

Questions has surfaced recently about Georgia’s passing game — or lack of it — under Mason. The Bulldogs are 13th in the SEC with an average of 162.2 yards per game.

But part of that is because Georgia is running the ball so well with Todd Gurley and the other tailbacks. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have been without their best deep-ball threats in Malcolm Mitchell and Justin Scott-Wesley, who are returning from injuries this week.

“I do think that having Justin and Malcolm is going to help,” Richt said. “I think it’s going to help our current receivers with more depth in practice, they won’t have to run as many routes, and in the game they’ll be more apt to be fresher, too, so we’ll see.”

Richt was asked directly if there was a plan to play redshirt freshman Brice Ramsey, who was first reserve in the game after Mason against Troy, this Saturday against Vanderbilt.

“A plan to? I don’t know,” Richt said. “We are just practicing everybody as usual and we will figure that out Thursday night as we talk.”
