Georgia sophomore Chase Kalisz repeated as NCAA champion in the 400-yard individual medley on Friday night in Austin, Texas. And he did it with more than a little flair.

Kalisz negotiated the race in 3:34.50, which not only set the school, pool and NCAA records, but also established new American and U.S. Open marks.

“It’s been a goal of mine all season long so to finally accomplish it, I couldn’t be happier right now,” Kalisz told reporters at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. “I feel like I’m on top of the world right now.”

Kalisz, who came to UGA from Bel Air, Md., claimed the title last year in 3:38.05. He had been steadily improving on that mark all season, and came close when he won the SEC championship in Athens earlier this season.

“Obviously when you set goals you have to believe in yourself,” Kalisz said. “I had an idea (it could be done) but luckily it worked out for me today. … It never gets old.”

Kalisz was uncertain at one point if he’d even have the chance to defend his national title. He was sidelined for the first couple of meets this season as UGA reviewed his academic eligibility. Kalisz was able to return to the pool in mid-January, but coach Jack Bauerle remains suspended over the issue, and an investigation continues into the matter.

The Bulldogs entered the second day of NCAA competition in fifth place overall.
