Everett Golson had 22 turnovers — 14 interceptions and eight fumbles — with Notre Dame last season.
He hasn’t thrown an interception or fumbled through four games at Florida State.
In fact, the 12th-ranked Seminoles (4-0, 2-0) have committed one turnover heading into Saturday’s game against Miami (3-1), a muffed punt.
Golson’s turnover problems were repeatedly addressed by the media while he shopped his services this spring, but he has 106 attempts this season without one.
Golson has completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 786 yards and seven touchdowns. He ranks fifth in the ACC with 196.5 yards per game.
“I have a lot of respect for (Golson),” Miami coach Al Golden told reporters this week. “He’s doing a great job in this system. He’s learned it incredibly fast. He’s protecting the football. He’s a winning quarterback. He’s winning for them. He’s doing exactly what they need to do. Whether that’s from coach play calls or him managing the game, he’s putting them in a position to win the game. That’s his No. 1 job as the quarterback.”
The Seminoles have relied heavily on running back Dalvin Cook, who leads the ACC with 142.5 yards per game, but he’s limited with a pulled hamstring.
Saturday’s game lacks the pizzazz of many of the past meetings between these rivals, including 2013, when No. 3 Florida State dominated No. 7 Miami 41-14.
The Hurricanes are coming off a loss to Cincinnati, haven’t won in Tallahassee since 2009 and have lost five consecutive to the Seminoles, making coach Jimbo Fisher 5-0 against them.
Florida State also has won 26 consecutive ACC games.
“It’s a big game,” Golden said. “They’ll be fired up. We know Florida State will be fired up. I want our guys to embrace the challenge and embrace the opportunity — all the atmosphere and everything — and play our game. That’s what I’m looking for.”
Fighting perceptions: The ACC has six wins over non-conference top-10 teams the past two seasons, the most of any conference, but many still perceive it to be the weakest Power Five conference.
Miami’s loss to Cincinnati didn’t help.
The ACC has lost 10 games to Power Five teams and three to Group of Five teams this season.
“I think we play the best football we’ve ever played in this league, from top to bottom,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford told the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat this week. “If you look at the last two years, I think it’s become pretty evident that the quality of football throughout the league is very, very good. And at a very high level.”
Florida State ended the SEC’s seven-year national title stranglehold in 2013, and the ACC went 4-0 against their SEC rivals on the last day of the regular season last November.
The SEC led the nation with 54 players selected in this year’s NFL Draft. The ACC was second with 47.
“The reality is there’s not a lot of difference between one conference to the next in the five major conferences,” Swafford told the Democrat. “… The differentials, when they are there, are pretty small in reality. Especially now.”
Eagles strong: Steve Addazio is an offensive coach, but Boston College has become a defensive team.
The Eagles lead the FBS in total defense (140 yards a game), rushing defense (43.4 yards), passing yards allowed (96.6), passing-efficiency defense (76.1) and first downs allowed (51).
They’re also third in points allowed (8.0) and in third-down percentage defense (20.3 percent).
“It’s certainly one of the very finest defenses in the country, and we’ve got to keep playing like that,” Addazio told reporters this week. “You can’t drink that Kool-Aid. You’ve got to be confident, and you’ve got to keep playing hard and realize every week is a new week.”
Linebacker Steven Daniels is Boston College’s top tackler with 30, and end Harold Landry leads the team with three sacks.
The Eagles (3-2, 0-2 ACC) held Duke to three field goals last week, but the Blue Devils won 9-7.
Brewer back: Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer has practiced this week and could play against North Carolina State on Friday.
Brewer’s left collarbone was broken in three places in the Hokies’ opening loss to Ohio State.
Brenden Motley has led Virginia Tech to a 2-2 record while Brewer has been out, but was sacked seven times and threw three interceptions in last week’s 17-13 loss to Pittsburgh.
He said it: "It's just so stupid. I'm really not that interesting. My wife would be the first one to tell you that. But it was the message before the game. We give you scholarships and all this stuff, but we can't give you guts and heart. BYOG (bring your own guts) just came to my head during the interview." — Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on his postgame interview after defeating Notre Dame
Etc.: Miami linebacker Raphael Kirby (Stephenson) has made at least 10 tackles in three consecutive games. … Boston College running back Myles Willis (Marist) is expected to play against Wake Forest after missing the past two games with a shoulder injury. … New coach Pat Narduzzi's influence is being felt at Pittsburgh. The Panthers have 17 sacks in four games after finishing with 19 in 2014. Narduzzi was the former defensive coordinator at Michigan State. … Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey (concussion), who missed the loss to LSU, is expected to play Saturday. … Linebacker Brandon Chubb (Hillgrove) leads Wake Forest with 41 tackles. … Duke needs two more victories this season to equal the school record for wins in a three-year span with 25. … Clemson receiver Mike Williams (neck) will miss the rest of the season. It originally was thought he'd miss six weeks.
