Georgia Tech guard Travis Jorgenson will not play for the team this coming season.
Jorgenson had not been taking part in summer workouts, although coaches had been keeping the door open for him to return given the shortage of players on the roster. However, Jorgenson was removed from the team roster on the website Sunday, an indication that coach Josh Pastner will be moving on without him.
Jorgenson is one semester shy of graduating from Tech. It’s believed he’s planning on staying this fall to earn his degree. While that would give him the option to leave for another school with immediate eligibility – he has two years of eligibility remaining – it’s believed that he is finished with his playing career.
Jorgenson played three season for Tech, recruited out of the New Hampton School in New Hampshire. His freshman season was derailed in the fourth game when he tore the ACL in his right knee, ending his season. He returned to play 58 games in the past two seasons, including 27 starts in 2014-15.
His playing time this past season was particularly limited after Marcus Georges-Hunt was moved to point guard, bumping Jorgenson down the point-guard rotation. In Tech’s final 17 games, he didn’t play in six and averaged 5.9 minutes in the other 11.
Without Jorgenson, Tech is down to 10 scholarship players for the coming season with three available slots. The team’s leading returning scorer is forward Quinton Stephens, who averaged 5.0 points per game. Of the 10, four are first-year or resdhirt freshmen, and a fifth, forward Abdoulaye Gueye, redshirted last season after playing sparingly as a first-year freshman.
