Georgia Tech safety Fred Holton, who missed the past two seasons with injuries and was hoping to contribute this season, has been dismissed from the team. Coach Paul Johnson gave the news Saturday at Tech’s media day.

Holton broke a team rule, Johnson said.

“They apply to everyone,” Johnson said. “They don’t just apply to some; they apply to everybody.”

After playing the 2010 season as a true freshman, Holton missed the 2011 season with an Achilles injury suffered in the preseason. He missed the 2012 season with a lower-leg injury. He was expected to compete for a starting spot at safety.

“I think he can be a really good football player, and hopefully that’ll happen for him somewhere,” Johnson said. “It just didn’t seem to work out here.”

Johnson said the incident took place Thursday or Friday night. He is the second player to leave the team in recent days. Offensive lineman Catlin Alford decided to leave the team prior to the start of fall camp Thursday.
