Georgia Tech received a letter of intent from New York point guard Jose Alvarado on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period. Alvarado, who committed to Tech and coach Josh Pastner in September, is Tech’s first signee of the 2017 class.
Alvarado, a three-star prospect from Christ the King High in Brooklyn, is ranked by ESPN as the No. 9 player the state of New York and the No. 33 point guard in the country. His AAU coach, Andy Borman, described him in August as being "as tough and competitive a kid as I've ever coached, and I've coached some pretty darn good players."
The early signing period ends Nov. 16. Two nationally ranked prospects who have included Tech in their list of finalists, Pebblebrook High guard Collin Sexton and Norcross High forward Rayshaun Hammonds, are expected to announce their decisions Thursday. With Alvarado signed, Tech has five scholarships remaining to give for 2017.
“We’re excited about Jose joining the Georgia Tech family,” Pastner said in a statement. “He is a flat-out winner who is as tough and hard-nosed as any player out there in the 2017 class. He will be an excellent addition as a student-athlete here at Georgia Tech.”
