GEORGIA MEMORABLE GAME

1971 (Georgia 28, Georgia Tech 24)

Things to know

1. Jimmy Poulos, the “Greek Streak,” scored the winning touchdown with a 1-yard dive with 14 seconds left in the 66th meeting between the two schools. The win snapped Tech’s two-game win streak in the series and four-game win streak that season.

2. To keep that drive alive, Andy Johnson ran for 22 yards to the 43-yard line and then completed a fourth-and-10 pass to tight end Mike Greene for 18 yards with 48 seconds left that give the Bulldogs the ball on Tech’s 25-yard line. The drive started with 1:29 left on the 35-yard line after a massive Tech punt from the end zone.

3. Vince Dooley included this game as one of his top 10 victories in his book, “Dooley: My 40 years at Georgia.” It was No. 10 on his list, one of two that included the Yellow Jackets. As chronicled in the book, “Clean Old-Fashioned Hate,” Furman Bisher wrote: “Backs slapped. Necks hugged. Whistles whistled. And the Lord thanked. Georgia hadn’t been so happy to win one from Tech since Theron Sapp broke the drought in 1957.”

What happened next for Georgia: The Bulldogs (10-1) defeated North Carolina 7-3 to win the Gator Bowl. They finished No. 7 in the AP poll and No. 8 in the coaches poll.

TECH MEMORABLE GAME

1999 (Tech 51, Georgia 48, OT)

Things to know

1. It appeared that Georgia running back Jasper Sanks was down inside the 2-yard line after a short run with less than 15 seconds left and the Bulldogs on the verge of a win. He lost the ball — he said he was already down and one official agreed — but another official ruled that it was Tech’s ball. The SEC officiating crew that worked the game later was suspended.

2. The two teams combined for 62 first downs and more than 1,100 yards of offense. The Bulldogs rushed for 171 yards and passed for 376. The Jackets rushed for 209 yards and passed for 341. Joe Hamilton led the Jackets with 94 rushing yards, while Sanks led the Bulldogs with 81. Dez White was Tech’s top receiver with 165 yards.

3. Luke Manget kicked a 38-yard field goal in overtime to clinch the win. Manget’s first attempt was blocked. Because the kick was taken on third down and Tech recovered the block behind the line of scrimmage, Manget got another attempt. A mob of Tech fans surrounded Hamilton after the game, his last at Bobby Dodd Stadium. “My last game at Grant Field, against the Bulldogs,” he said afterward. “A great way to end the game.”

What happened next for Tech: The Jackets lost in the Gator Bowl to Miami 28-13. The team finished 8-4, No. 20 in the AP poll and No. 21 in the coaches poll.
