Georgia coach Mark Richt would not say if tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith will miss any playing time this fall as a result of his arrest last month.
“I’m taking care of him,” Richt said. “He’s already been in the process of handling some of it. . . I’m just going to say that it’s internal.”
Flournoy-Smith, a rising sophomore from Moultrie, was arrested by UGA Police on Feb. 22 and charged with falsely reporting a crime after claiming the text books he'd cashed in were stolen. Meanwhile Flournoy-Smith has been impressive in practices and workouts.
“He runs real well, he has good hands. He ought to be able to earn some quality playing time,” Richt said. “We’re not going to give it to him. But he can move and he has good route-running skills and he’s tough. I think he’s got a bright future is he just makes good choices and works hard.”
Richt on 2 NCAA overrides
Two of the NCAA board’s 25 deregulation proposals were put on hold Thursday after producing a tidal wave of negative feedback from a number of schools. Officially, 75 of 300-plus Division I schools nationwide have to formally file an “override” for proposals to be rescinded.
The two proposals suspended Thursday were related to recruiting staff sizes and printed materials that can be sent to recruits. Richt was asked Thursday if that will impact the Bulldogs’ staffing decisions for the immediate future.
"I think Georgia's gonna do what we need to do to compete at this level," he said.
Practice update
Georgia completed its third of 14 practices (not including the April 6 G-Day Game) on Thursday. The Bulldogs will be dismissed for a week of spring break on Friday before resuming workout on March 19.
Georgia’s last couple of spring sessions have been interrupted by the university’s spring break. “It’s not bad,” Richt said. “Right now, Brandon Harton (knee) and Keith Marshall (hamstring), if we went straight through they might miss another week. But when we get back both of those guys will be able to go, so that’s a good thing.”
Richt said the Bulldogs look like “a team with more endurance and quickness.” He said wide receiver Justin Scott-Wesley is down to 205 pounds from 220 and that tailback Todd Gurley looks “more fit and trim.
