In the first half of Georgia Tech’s game with Duke, penalties extended both of the Blue Devils’ scoring drives, leading to their 14-12 halftime lead.

“We killed ourselves with penalties,” coach Paul Johnson told sideline reporter Randy Waters on the team broadcast.

On Duke’s second possession of the game, the Jackets defense appeared to have forced a three-and-out, but were called for offsides on the fourth-and-4 punt play to give the Blue Devils a first down at their 36-yard line.

Three plays later, on a second-and-22 at the Duke 24, safety Corey Griffin was called for a targeting penalty on a 29-yard completion from quarterback Anthony Boone to running back Shaun Wilson, which tacked on an additional 15 yards to the play. Duke was in the end zone six plays later to take a 7-3 first-quarter lead. The penalty was upheld on video review, which resulted in Griffin’s disqualification.

On Tech’s first possession of the second quarter, the Jackets were going for it on fourth-and-3 at the Duke 46-yard line, but a false-start penalty on left guard Trey Braun forced the Jackets to punt.

On the ensuing possession, with Duke leading 7-6, Boone threw incomplete on third-and-8, but cornerback Chris Milton was called for pass interference for a first down. After converting a third-and-26, Duke went on to score its second touchdown for a 14-6 lead.

Tech went into halftime down 14-12.
