Kennesaw State men’s basketball coach Al Skinner has hired his first assistant and it’s someone he knows well: Carlton Owens.

Owens played for Skinner at Rhode Island and led the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring as a senior in 1988.

Owens brings several years of college coaching experience to the Owls. After leaving Rhode Island and playing in the CBA, he worked for Tom Penders at Texas from 1996-98. Owens later was an assistant at St. Peters (N.J.) College for a year, then an assistant at Albany in 2000-01 and then spent a year as an assistant at Nebraska from 2006-07.

He also brings more than 10 years of experience coaching on the AAU circuit in different stints.

Skinner has elected not to retain any of the assistants from his predecessor, Jimmy Lallathin.

The three-year contract signed by David Rivers before the 2014-15 season is being negotiated. It contained no buyout clause.
