Georgia State football coach Trent Miles said he sees talent through the first five practices of camp, but he wants to see more intelligence.

“We still lack being a smart football team,” he said. “You can’t get kicked out of a game because you are mad and want to fight.

“You’ve got to be a smart football player.”

The Panthers had issues with discipline last season, averaging 64.9 yards in flags through 12 games. That placed them ninth in the 11 teams in the Sun Belt.

The only bad news Miles and the team have experienced in the first five practices is the loss of running back Taz Bateman to a season-ending knee injury.

The competition to find a starting quarterback continued on Monday with Conner Manning, Emiere Scaife and Aaron Winchester each showing flashes.

Manning had a long pass on one play in an 11-on-11 setting, followed by Scaife making a long run, followed by Winchester hitting Ari Werts for a bomb on the next play. There were also stretches of incompletions during seven-on-sevens when only Jaquez Parks, who joined the team on Saturday, completing passes.

The quarter is competing to replace Nick Arbuckle, who helped the Panthers go 6-7 appear in their first bowl game last season.

Georgia State will host Ball State at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 2 to open this season.
