Georgia State coach Trent Miles continues to be pleased by this team’s performances in practice.

“We’ve gotten better and better,” he said on Monday. “It’s a marathon. We are looking to peak when we play.”

The Panthers will host Charlotte when they open the season on Sept. 4 at the Georgia Dome.

Monday’s practice focused on special teams, and each position group worked on improving their fundamentals and techniques.

The team will take its first day off on Tuesday, breaking a string of five consecutive practices.

Height rising: Wide receiver Nyiakki Height is one of the players that continues to impress.

Running what started as a curl route and turned into a go because the cornerback pressed, Height had the catch of camp on Monday when he ran under a long pass from Nick Arbuckle and caught it just over his shoulder.

“Nick placed a great ball,” Height said.

Height was one of six players who transferred from UAB to Georgia State following the temporary dissolution of the program. A former standout at Osborne, Height had 17 catches for 136 yards for the Blazers last year.

A big target at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Height is pushing for a starting spot, playing outside opposite Robert Davis.

“It’s been pretty smooth,” Height said.

Height said Georgia State’s talent and depth at wide receiver compare to what UAB last year, which culminated with J.J. Nelson being picked by the Cardinals in the fifth round of the NFL draft earlier this year.

“I’m feeling the love,” he said. “It feels like I’m part of the family. We are changing the culture around here. I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

Out: Because of the structure of the practice, right Alex Stoehr didn't dress out on Monday. Miles said they wanted to give him a chance to rest his back. Defensive lineman Shawayne Lawrence (knee) dressed out but didn't participate in most drills.

Number changes: Wide receiver Penny Hart switched jersey numbers from 30 to 18. Bryan Williams had changed to No. 20.
