Georgia’s Sony Michel did not practice again on Wednesday, but that doesn’t mean he won’t play in Saturday’s game against Auburn.
The freshman tailback from Plantation, Fla., missed his third consecutive day of practice with an ankle injury.
“It just means he wasn’t ready today,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said after the Bulldogs’ 90-minute workout at Woodruff Practice Fields.
Asked if he could play on Saturday, Richt said, “Uh-huh. He has gotten better every day. I know that. I always say hopeful. I’m hopeful he can play.”
Michel just returned to the playing field this past Saturday after sitting out the previous six weeks and five games with a broken shoulder blade. Michel had a team-high 16 carries against Kentucky and finished with 87 yards rushing, including a 23-yard touchdown.
Richt was even more pessimistic regarding junior tailback Keith Marshall. He called Marshall, who has missed the past six games with knee and ankle sprains, “doubtful.”
Of course, Georgia feels like it will still be able to compete at the tailback position. Junior Todd Gurley will be playing for the first time since his four-game suspension and Nick Chubb, the team’s leading rusher with 895 yards, remains healthy and active in practice.
“Those guys are practicing hard,” Richt said. “Just watching their work habits is fun. Brendan Douglas is also doing a good job. And Keith’s getting some reps here and there.”
