Georgia Tech guard Justin Moore will transfer after a sophomore season in which his playing time drastically diminished. Moore made the announcement Thursday via his Twitter account, two days after the Yellow Jackets’ season ended with a first-round loss in the ACC Tournament.
Moore, from San Diego, chose Tech in June 2016 after he had been released from his letter of intent with Tulane following a coaching change. Moore played in 34 games and started 18, averaging 4.4 points and 2.4 assists per game.
This season, he played 47 minutes in the first two games, scoring three points on 1-for-11 shooting, then sat out the next two games with an NCAA suspension. He played in six of the next seven games, including a seven-assist, zero-turnover performance in Tech’s loss to Grambling State.
He did not play for the remainder of the season and sometimes did not travel with the team for road games for academic reasons. At the time of point guard Jose Alvarado’s season-ending elbow fracture, coach Josh Pastner said he would not go in Moore’s direction as a replacement, but did not explain his rationale beyond saying that it was “nothing personal against Justin.”
He finished the season with eight games played, seven points, seven rebounds and 10 assists against 14 turnovers.
If he transfers to another Division I school, he will have to sit out a season and then have two more of eligibility.
In his statement, Moore thanked the Tech coaches and support staff for allowing him to attend Tech before stating his decision to transfer after thought and consideration with family.
“I am grateful for the opportunity and appreciate the experiences that Georgia Tech has provided me,” he said. I will forever cherish the memories I shared with my brothers, coaches and Georgia Tech family. Forever a Yellow Jacket!”
