If there was ever any question about who was No. 2 executive in the Georgia athletic department, there is not anymore.
Josh Brooks, who has held a number of senior administrative titles within the UGA Athletic Association over the years, was promoted to senior deputy director on Thursday. Now, only Athletic Director Greg McGarity has seniority over Brooks.
Brooks previously was deputy athletic director for operations. Brooks returned to Georgia three years ago as senior executive associate AD after stints at Louisiana-Monroe as senior associate AD and a short stint at Millsaps College as athletic director. He started at UGA as director of football operations and worked his way up from there.
“Josh has provided outstanding leadership throughout his two stints at the University of Georgia,” UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity said in a news release. “Josh is highly respected throughout all levels of the University and is very familiar with the daily operations of our department. He’s building a national reputation as a rising star among athletic administrators in the Power 5.”
Also receiving a promotion Thursday was Will Lawler, who is now deputy director for compliance after holding the title of executive associate director.
UGA President Jere Morehead also issued a statement on the promotions.
“Greg McGarity has assembled, in my view, the finest senior athletic staff anywhere,” said Morehead, who chairs the athletic association's board of directors. “He has created quality and depth everywhere in the Georgia Athletic Association. I have particularly relied on the leadership and expertise of Josh Brooks in advancing our many capital facility projects and envisioning the future growth and positioning of Georgia athletics in a rapidly changing athletic environment.”
In the next year, Brooks will be overseeing the construction of an $80 million football facility within the current footprint of the Butts-Mehre athletics complex. That construction got underway at the beginning of the new year.
Other “deputies” in Georgia's athletic department include Darrice Griffin (administration), Magdi El Shahawy (academics), Stephanie Ransom (finance) and Matt Borman (development).
