Johnson: Tech ‘way, way better’ at B-back
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said his team is “way, way better” at B-back this season compared with last year.
Johnson said that sophomore Marcus Marshall and freshman Dedrick Mills are “1A and 1B” in the competition for the starting job.
“They are both going to play a lot,” he said. “That’s good.”
Johnson said redshirt freshman Quaide Weimerskirch is doing a good job with his blocking and that redshirt freshman Kirvonte Benson is also doing some good things, as is redshirt senior Marcus Allen.
“They are competing,” Johnson said. “It helps when you have guys competing.”
Johnson said as many as five guys can play in the rotation. Johnson said they needed to let the competition play out to determine who would earn the starting job.
Marshall started three games last season led the Jackets with 654 rushing yards. He added four touchdowns. After moving from linebacker to B-back in the spring of 2015, Allen played in nine games and had 166 rushing yards.
Defensive lineman Patrick Gamble, who faces the B-backs in practices, said that the backs have been doing a good job of finding holes. He said Mills runs hard, is hard to tackle and has good vision. Gamble said Benson has broken a few runs on the defense.
“The B-back group as a whole is pretty good and they are going to have a good rotation and give us what we need back there,” Gamble said.
