For the first time since his freshman season at Georgia, Damian Swann did not start at cornerback for the Bulldogs.

The senior unexpectedly sat out Saturday’s game due to a head injury he suffered in practice late last week. His status for the Tennessee game is not known, but coach Mark Richt indicated Swann should be back soon.

“He landed funny on a pass-skeleton drill and when he came down he ended up hitting his head pretty good,” Richt said. “It was considered a contact headache and not a concussion, but we didn’t want to take any chances.”

Coming in, Swann was tied with center David Andrews for the team lead in consecutive starts (29). In his absence, redshirt freshman Aaron Davis moved down from safety and started at the strong corner. Quincy Mauger started at the safety.

In the meantime, the Bulldogs played a lot of players in the secondary. Freshmen Rico Johnson and Malkom Parrish also got in at cornerback. Johnson forced a fumble, one of two takeaways defensive backs had in the game.

“That got me amped up,” said Johnson, who signed with the Bulldogs as a receiver. “We’ve just got to keep it rolling after this game. Hopefully this will get us going.”
