Georgia’s defense of Todd Gurley didn’t come cheap.

As Athletic Director Greg McGarity proudly revealed while the Bulldogs were dealing with the star tailback’s ineligibility issue back in October, the UGA Athletic Association had agreed to foot the bill for legal services. Those bills came due recently.

According to a Nov. 13 invoice turned over to The Atlanta Journal-Constition in compliance with an open-records request, Georgia wrote a check for $43,301.26 to the Birmingham lawfirm of Lightfoot, Franklin & White. That’s who William King, who represented Gurley in his proceedings with the NCAA, works for that group.

Gurley, a junior tailback, was suspended by the Bulldogs on Oct. 9 after they learned he had been autographing sports memorablia in exchange for cash the last two years. Gurley eventually ruled ineligible for four games by the NCAA. He returned for the Nov. 15 game against Auburn and had 138 yards rushing before being lost to a season-ending knee injury in the fourth quarter.

Gurley, who finished with 911 rushing yards and scored 13 TDs had knee surgery late last month and plans to apply for early-entry in the NFL draft in January.
