R.J. Hunter became the first player in Georgia State history to be selected the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year.
Hunter won the award Friday by unanimous vote after leading all freshmen and finishing sixth among all players in scoring with an average of 17.0 points per game. Hunter broke the school’s freshman scoring record, with 527 points.
His season included scoring a career-high 38 points against Old Dominion, when he tied the CAA record by making 10 3-pointers.
Hunter also joins North Carolina Wilmington’s Brett Blizzard (1999-2000) as the only freshmen to be named all-conference first team.
Joining Hunter on the first team were Towson’s Jerrelle Benimon (who is the conference’s player of the year), UNCW’s Keith Rendleman, Delaware’s Devon Saddler and Northeastern’s Joel Smith.
Towson’s Pat Skerry was chosen coach of the year, and Delaware’s Jamelle Hagins was chosen defensive player of the year.
Georgia State’s James Vincent was selected to the all-defensive team after finishing second in the conference in blocks (2.3 per game).
