Georgia State’s R.J. Hunter was named the Sun Belt Conference male athlete of the year Tuesday.

Hunter, a sophomore on the basketball team, was earlier this year named the Sun Belt’s male basketball player of the year after helping lead the Panthers to a 17-1 conference record and regular-season title.

Hunter became the third player in program history to earn AP All-American honors after averaging 18.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

He finished among Division I leaders in 3-point field goals made (100), 3-point field-goal attempts (253) and free-throw percentage (88.2).

“As a coach, I am honored that one of my players could receive such a high honor,” said Ron Hunter, R.J.’s father and coach, in a statement given to the media. “As his father, I am so proud of his accomplishments. He had a great year on the court, and I look forward to what he is able to accomplish in the future.”
