Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory has an easy-to-follow plan for new graduate transfer Adam Smith, whose switch from Virginia Tech to Georgia Tech was made official Tuesday. Speaking at the ACC spring meetings, Gregory said he wants Smith, a guard who last season led the ACC in 3-point shooting at 42.4 percent and his team in scoring at 13.4 points per game, to shoot “every time he’s open.”
Gregory was clearly enthused about the addition, particularly given his team’s inability to score from 3-point range. In recruiting Smith after he decided to leave Virginia Tech, Gregory said that he tried to “show him how well he’d fit in, that there wasn’t only a want, but there was a need.”
Gregory sees Smith, a Fayette County High grad, as a dynamic player who can score as a spot-up shooter but also by driving to the basket.
“I think he just adds a dimension to the game, to our team, that was needed,” Gregory said.
He will be enrolled for Georgia Tech’s second summer term, beginning June 22.
Tech still has one scholarship it can fill and is focused on graduate transfers. Former Providence forward Tyler Harris, who has visited Tech, is a possibility. James White, a forward from Arkansas-Little Rock and Jonesboro High, and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa, a forward from Richmond and Norcross High, are two others.
