Halfway through the season, and six undefeated FBS teams remain in the FBS. Two of them are in Mississippi, and they are two of the reasons why the past two weeks have been a couple of the most exciting in college football in several years. Mississippi State is off Saturday, and Ole Miss should be able to handle Tennessee, so here’s a look at five other games on your watch list this week.
Texas A&M at Alabama, 3:30 p.m., CBS
The Crimson’s Tide offense has blown an engine after being in the fast lane earlier this season. Alabama has scored 17 and 14 points the past two weeks, the first time the Crimson Tide have done that in consecutive weeks since 2007. Texas A&M is in a precarious position after losing two straight.
Georgia at Arkansas (Little Rock), 4 p.m., SEC Network
The Bulldogs better be careful. The Razorbacks have twice come oh so close to snapping their SEC losing streak, losing to Texas A&M in OT and by one point last week to Alabama. Will a pass be thrown in this game? Arkansas and Georgia are Nos. 1 and 2 in the SEC in rushing.
Georgia Tech at North Carolina, 7 p.m., ESPNU
Here’s a math quiz: What does 70 plus 50 plus 34 plus 50 equal? Congrats if you said 204. That’s also the amount of points that North Carolina has given up in its four-game losing streak. Divide that total by four, and it equals 51 per game. And good news to Georgia Tech, which should find room to run.
Kentucky at LSU, 7:30 p.m., SEC Network
It’s the middle of October, and folks are still talking about football in Lexington. What an anomaly. Mark Stoops has Kentucky basking in football glory, but the Wildcats are just now reaching the meat course of their season-long meal. On Saturday: a trip to Baton Rouge. On Oct. 25: No. 1 Mississippi State.
Notre Dame at Florida State, 8 p.m., ABC
These are the kind of games that are great for college football, with or without Jameis Winston. Notre Dame has played one ranked team — Stanford — and hasn’t faced a team with the overall speed of Florida State. Let’s hope the controversy surrounding Winston doesn’t overwhelm the game between two of the other remaining undefeated teams.
