Georgia Tech will not have a German defensive lineman, it turns out.
Julius Welschof, a defensive end from Miesbach, Germany, who had been committed to Tech since October, made a last-minute flip to Michigan, announcing his decision on a video posted to his Twitter account.
Michigan, a school he had visited last summer on a camp tour, came in with a scholarship offer in the final days before the early signing period began on Wednesday.
“I want to get to the NFL,” Welschof said. “I think the best way to do that is going with Michigan, with the best coaches, best players and best program. But I want to thank Georgia Tech for recruiting me. They did a great job, but at the end of the day, I have to think about myself, and I think that’s the best school for me.”
Welschof was an intriguing prospect – a former competitive skier who had only begun to play football in the past four years after learning about the game on a visit to the U.S. Welschof is 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds and can run the 40-yard dash in 5.0 seconds, evidence that he has the tools to be a star player. Tech went so far as to send defensive line coach Mike Pelton to Germany for a home visit earlier this month, all for naught.
Another German defensive lineman whom Tech had brought in for an official visit this past weekend, Lorenz Metz, made his announcement to sign with Cincinnati.
