Former Georgia Tech kicker Brenton King has entered his name into the transfer portal, a source confirmed Thursday to the AJC. It was first reported by 247Sports.
King is expected to graduate this summer and can transition to a new school as a grad transfer, enabling him to play immediately. King, from Mill Creek High, has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He played in three seasons but can claim the 2018 season as a redshirt year as he appeared in four games. At the start of spring practice in March, coach Geoff Collins said that King had left the team and had accepted a job.
In a tweet posted Thursday afternoon, King said that “(God) has changed what I thought should be my future” and led him back to football.
I will always point to God during good and bad times. He has changed what I thought should be my future and has lead me back to sport I love. I have entered the transfer portal and I am super excited for what he has planed for me next. 🙏🏻🏈 #37 pic.twitter.com/QrvJoNEhIQ

Tech’s kickoffs and placekicks this season will be attempted by someone without experience at the college level. The only kickers on the roster are sophomore punter/kicker Cliff Gandis and freshman Steven Verdisco, both walk-ons. Allatoona High grad Jude Kelley is expected to join the team as a walk-on. Kelley was rated the No. 5 kicker in the country by Chris Sailer Kicking and Verdisco 37th. Gandis was named South Carolina specialist of the year as a high-school senior in 2017.
King had mixed results in three seasons with the Yellow Jackets. As a freshman in 2017, King was 5-for-6 on field-goal attempts and 15-for-16 on point-after tries and averaged 59.3 yards on kickoffs.
In his sophomore and junior seasons, he was 4-for-11 on field-goal tries, 27-for-28 on PAT’s and averaged 52.9 yards on kickoffs.
