Georgia Tech has selected its new broadcasting voice. Pending a background check, the replacement to Brandon Gaudin will be South Carolina basketball and baseball play-by-play man Andy Demetra, a person familiar with the decision said Monday evening.

An announcement could come in the next day or two. Demetra was one of roughly 60 candidates for the job to replace Gaudin, who left Tech in June after three years to take jobs with EA Sports, the Big Ten Network and Westwood One Sports. Athletic department officials interviewed Demetra and two other candidates on-campus in the past several days.

Demetra has called Gamecocks basketball and baseball games on a full-time basis since 2009. He had previously called women’s basketball and some men’s basketball games for South Carolina. A Syracuse graduate, he was named the South Carolina radio sportscaster of the year in 2005 and 2006 and was the youngest recipient of the award in the history of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.

The Tech job would offer him the opportunity to take on football play-by-play, which at South Carolina is filled by former Gamecocks quarterbackTodd Ellis. He will also host the coaches’ shows. His job will begin with a rush, as his first play-by-play action will be calling Tech’s game against Boston College in Dublin Sept. 3.

Coincidentally, the last basketball game that Demetra called for South Carolina was against Tech, a second-round NIT game won by the Yellow Jackets.
