Georgia Tech sophomore forward Kristian Sjolund will redshirt this season, or at least has intentions to do so, coach Josh Pastner said Tuesday.

Pastner had kept him off the court as Sjolund considered the option, which would give him an extra year to develop and train. Pastner and Sjolund had contemplated the option last season also before Sjolund decided to play.

“As of (Tuesday), the plan is to redshirt him,” Pastner said. “I don’t see anything changing on that, but as of right now, he’s planning to be a redshirt.”

As a redshirt, Sjolund can devote more time to getting stronger in the weight room and working on individual skill training. Sjolund is 6-foot-8 and 213 pounds.

“You’re not worried about fresh legs,” Pastner said. “You’re using that as more opportunity to develop individually.”

Last season, Sjolund played 198 minutes in 21 games, with 63 points, 22 rebounds, four assists and 14 turnovers. He shot 36 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range.
