Georgia State’s Spring Football Caravan will make eight stops in the metro Atlanta area in April.
Panthers coaches Trent Miles, Ron Hunter, Sharon Baldwin-Tener and others will meet with alumni and supports throughout the area:
April 7: Alpharetta
April 8: Smyrna/Vinings
April 9: Decatur
April 14: Lawrenceville
April 15: Jonesboro
April 16: Kennesaw/Marietta
April 21: Tucker
April 23: Buckhead
Sites and times of the meetings will be announced later.
The caravan is another step in the athletic department’s attempts to connect with alumni on a more grassroots level. The Panther Athletic Club has a goal of reaching 2,000 members by July 1, 2017. The PAC closed 2014 with 950 members.
Signing Day: Georgia State will host a free Signing Day event on Wednesday at the team's practice facility at 188 MLK Drive SE. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with the coaches reviewing the players who signed at 6 p.m. That will be followed by a social hour at 6:30 p.m. For more info, call 404-413-4170.
The Panthers have signed eight junior-college players and six players who transferred from Alabama-Birmingham.
More football: The university has yet to arrange replacements for Alabama-Birmingham on this year's and next year's schedules. A university spokesman said they are close to finding a new opponent.
Softball: The Panthers were last week predicted to finish third in the Sun Belt. Shortstop Taylor Anderson and catcher Lauren Coleman were selected for the preseason all-conference team.
Georgia State opens the season at Auburn on Feb. 12.
Eighteen of the team’s games will be broadcast on www.georgiastatesports.com. The first broadcast will be the home opener on Feb. 20 against Savannah State. The broadcasts will begin 15 minutes before the scheduled first pitch.
Baseball: Third baseman Matt Rose and catcher Joey Roach were named to the Sun Belt all-conference preseason team.
Rose, a junior, hit .312 with 11 home runs last year. As a pitcher, he went 4-3 with five saves and a 3.05 ERA.
Roach, a junior, hit .301 with three homers and 23 RBI.
The Panthers were picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll.
Georgia State will open the season hosting Fordham on Feb. 13 at 4 p.m.
