Georgia State’s football team will look to build momentum on last year’s bowl season when it starts spring practice on Thursday.

Coach Trent Miles’ squad went 6-7 last season and returns 16 starters, making it one of the more experienced teams in the Sun Belt Conference.

Miles wants to see a few things that most coaches want to see during the next 15 practices: maintaining health and improving player development, which is football-speak for every coach and player getting better at what they do.

“We’ve seen it in the weight room, now we will see it on the football field,” Miles said.

Of course, there are more things that Miles needs to see that are specific to his team.

The first is finding a quarterback.

The second is settling on rotations at the offensive line.

The third is finding combinations on the defense's front seven.

The fourth is finding a new kicker/punter.

Wil Lutz handled both duties last season, hitting 12-of-19 field goals, 42-of-43 point-after attempts and averaging 44.3 yards on 65 punts. He exhausted his eligibility.

The leading candidate is Brandon Wright, a redshirt freshman who was a Class AA all-state specialist at KIPP Atlanta Collegiate.

During Wright’s redshirt year he wouldn’t waste too many minutes during practices. While the offense and defense did their thing, Wright would work on his drops as a punter, his steps on his field goals, and his accuracy, among other things.

Wright will be challenged by a walk-on.

The returners won’t change and includes Taz Bateman, Penny Hart and Glenn Smith.
