Donovan Harden, Georgia State’s leading receiver last year, is expected to miss six to eight weeks after suffering a broken bone on the outside of his right foot.
The injury occurred when he tripped over someone’s foot during a non-contact drill on Sunday. With the timeline, Harden could return for the game at Oregon on Sept. 19.
“It’s just bad luck,” coach Trent Miles said.
Harden is a preseason all-conference selection after catching 60 passes for 885 yards and seven touchdowns last year. He also led the team with 977 all-purpose yards.
Miles said there are a lot of candidates that could take Harden’s spot in the sets, including freshman Penny Hart, sophomores Glenn Smith and Todd Boyd and seniors Nyiakki Height and Avery Sweeting.
“There are guys to choose from,” Miles said.
The Panthers will open the season Sept. 4 against Charlotte at the Georgia Dome without two of its best receivers should tight end Joel Ruiz not return in time from his knee injury. Ruiz is also a preseason all-conference selection after catching 39 passes for 478 yards last year.
