Georgia’s J.J. Green not letting targeting call slow him

For the record, J.J. Green thinks it was a bad call. And also for the record, the sandwiches in the coaches’ office at Sanford Stadium aren’t bad.

Those are a couple of revelations the sophomore defensive back had after his extremely short appearance in this past Saturday’s game against Troy at Sanford Stadium. Green was ejected for a targeting penalty at the end of his only play in the game.

“Was it a good call? No, if you ask me,” said Green, who was playing safety at the time. “I’ve been playing football my whole life. They just made this rule to protect players, I understand that. But I led with the shoulder. Just because my helmet made a little bit of contact. (The receiver) got up and told me he thought it was a good play.”

The officials reviewed video of the play and the targeting call was upheld, as was Green’s ejection.

As a result, Green said he ended up in the coaches’ room inside the lockeroom underneath the East stands at Sanford. There he found a television and some sandwiches.

“Yeah I did (eat a couple),” Green said with a grin. “A couple of drinks, too. Watched the game.”

Green said he had the support of his teammates.

“They were all like, ‘Free, J.J.!”

The setback didn’t seem to set back Green too much. He said he’s been working with the first-team defense this week at strong safety and expects to play Saturday against Tennessee.

“I look at it as a plus,” Green said. “I knocked him out, knocked the ball out, got ejected. Most of the time receivers aren’t going to catch that ball anymore if they watch that film.”
