After 18 years, hundreds of Georgia Tech football and basketball games and dozens of memorable calls, Wes Durham will step away from his microphone at Bobby Dodd Stadium and McCamish Pavilion.
Durham, the beloved and award-winning play-by-play man for Yellow Jackets football and basketball since 1995, will leave Tech to pursue a television opportunity.
“I’m really excited,” Durham said Tuesday evening. “It’s hard, obviously. I’ve got a lot of time invested there with a lot of great people. At the same time, the opportunity there was something that I’m excited about. It’s one of those things that I felt like I wanted to take advantage of the chance.”
Durham, 47, could not be specific about the new job, but allowed that it was play-by-play work on television. Durham will continue to be the voice of the Falcons, a job he has held since 2004. He informed athletic director Mike Bobinski, men’s basketball coach Brian Gregory, football coach Paul Johnson and other athletic department staffers Tuesday of his decision.
Durham wasn’t actively pursuing a new job, but said that doing television work was a career goal of his. The opportunity “came together in a matter of weeks on a larger scale,” he said, and was too great to pass up.
“It’s something that, I didn’t expect it to materialize to the scale that it has and to the point where, if I didn’t do it now, I might not get the chance (again),” he said.
Tech and multi-media rights holder IMG College will conduct a search for its new play-by-play voice.
