Georgia Tech running back Synjyn Days’ versatility was particularly useful against Virginia Tech two weeks ago. During a drive when Days was on the field as an A-back, B-back Zach Laskey ran out of gas and told Days he needed him to take over for him.
“So he runs off the field,” Days said. “I’m like, We need an A-back!”
Days’ role playing both running back spots will continue. After mostly playing B-back in the first three games, Days said he played about 25 snaps at A-back and about eight at B-back against Virginia Tech. Coach Paul Johnson has said repeatedly that he wants Days to get on the field more, but that the limited number of plays that Tech has run in its first four games has limited opportunities. Johnson said last week that he would want Days to play about half of the offense’s snaps between the two positions.
“At first, it was a little difficult trying to make sure I block this person on this play and deciphering between the two (positions),” he said. “But after going through practice and paying attention to the little things, I got onto it.”
Days works at both in practice and attends position meetings with the quarterbacks and B-backs, and then meets with A-backs coach Lamar Owens separately. Days has nine carries for 44 yards and one touchdown this season, with attempts taken from both positions. Days said he no longer practices at quarterback, his original position at Tech, “but you never know what Coach Johnson will pull out of his bag of tricks.”
