Former Georgia Tech safety Demond Smith was unable to participate in most of the team’s pro day after suffering an apparent quadricep strain while running the 40-yard dash Friday.

Smith was treated after pulling up while running the 40 at the Brock indoor facility. Having not played in a pre-draft showcase game, Smith was one who could have particularly helped himself with a good showing both in the testing and in position drills.

It’s conceivable that, once healthy, Smith could invite scouts back to Tech for a private workout.

“I felt really bad for Demond out here,” coach Paul Johnson said. “Hurt himself in the first sprint. I know he worked really hard preparing for it.”

It is a rather cruel irony that Smith had to pull out due to injury. In his Tech career, he was near perfect in his durability. He missed only one game in his entire career, playing in 52 games (two shy of the school record for career games played) and starting in 31 of them.
