Georgia Tech was not the choice for five-star wide receiver prospect Demetris Robertson. At an announcement made Sunday at the College Football Hall of Fame – about a mile from Tech’s Midtown campus – Savannah Christian star announced that he will play for California.
Tech had been in the mix with Cal, Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Stanford. Tech coaches had continued to recruit Robertson after he delayed his decision well past national signing day, but were not terribly hopeful about winning the derby for his enrollment.
Tech could well have use a highly-regarded playmaker such as Robertson, who could have brought a playmaking element to the Tech offense that it lacked in the 2015 season. From a rankings standpoint, Robertson would have been Tech’s biggest signee at least since Calvin Johnson in 2004 and possibly longer.
Instead, Tech will proceed into the summer as planned, with Ricky Jeune and Brad Stewart the expected starting wide receivers, with Christian Philpott, Harland Howell and others expected to provide competition.
It brought to an end a most unusual recruiting process, one that ended nearly three months after national signing day. Robertson delayed his decision at least in part due to his attempts to achieve the SAT score necessary to qualify for admission to Stanford.
