Georgia Tech made its hire of assistant coach Darryl LaBarrie official with a news release Wednesday.

“I’m excited that Darryl is coming back to Georgia Tech,” coach Josh Pastner said in a statement. “He has spent most of his playing and coaching career in his hometown, and he knows this area as well as anyone. He’s a tremendous coach, and he knows what Georgia Tech is all about. His high level of character and integrity will add a lot to this program.”

LaBarrie grew up in DeKalb County, played for coaches Bobby Cremins and Paul Hewitt at Tech, graduating in 2001. He later coached for Hewitt in the final two seasons of his tenure, 2009-11. He was at Georgia State for the past five seasons. He also previously coached for the Atlanta Celtics AAU team and was an assistant at Stone Mountain High.

“I’m ecstatic about the opportunity to work with Coach Pastner, who is one of the hardest workers and brightest minds in college basketball,” LaBarrie said in a statement. “Georgia Tech is one of the premier programs in the country historically and a place that I call home. I will work tirelessly to help get the program back to the level of national prominence that it once enjoyed.”
