Athlon Sports says the SEC East will be a tight race in 2014 but gives Georgia " a slight pre-spring edge" to win the division in its "Early SEC Predictions."
The magazine expects Georgia’s defense to show “significant improvement” with new coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and “a ton of talent returning.” Athlon says Hutson Mason, the heir to Aaron Murray at quarterback, “will be surrounded by one of the top supporting casts in the SEC.”
Athlon made its predictions before the AJC reported that Bulldogs safety Josh Harvey-Clemons will miss the first three games of the season as a continuation of the suspension that forced him to miss the Gator Bowl. Harvey-Clemons won't suit up for the Georgia's SEC opener at South Carolina.
Athlon predicts Alabama will win the SEC West and that the Tide, Auburn and LSU all should begin the season ranked in the top 15 nationally.
