After making his first seven field goal attempts this season, University of Miami kicker Jake Wieclaw has missed four in a row.
That’s one more attempt than Wieclaw missed all of last season when he made 11 of 14 kicks.
Worse yet, two of Wieclaw’s misses — from 22 yards against Georgia Tech on Sept. 22 and 19 yards last week against North Carolina State — were from extra-point distance.
Wieclaw wasn’t made available to reporters this week, but coach Al Golden said Wednesday that he has confidence in the senior kicker.
“Jake’s doing good,” Golden said. “I trust Jake. I feel he’s a great 3-point shooter and if he’s missing a couple … I know he’s going to be due for a big game. I have complete faith in him.”
Golden indicated earlier in the week that he might give redshirt freshman Matt Goudis a chance to compete for Wieclaw’s job. Goudis has never attempted a place kick in a game for the Hurricanes.
Noteworthy: Golden said that freshman receiver Robert Lockhart, from West Boca Raton High could make his collegiate debut on Saturday against Notre Dame. … Freshman receiver Malcolm Lewis was expected to begin attending classes again at UM on Wednesday, Golden said. Lewis sustained a season-ending dislocated ankle against Georgia Tech and underwent surgery.
