Because of the style of football coach Will Muschamp preaches, special teams are a critical part of No. 3 Florida’s success.
With a stout defense and a conservative offense, the Gators’ games are typically grind-it-out affairs in which any margin created by special teams can be crucial.
“It’s very evident every Saturday: We’re a team that’s not going to overpower you in any form or fashion,” Muschamp said. “We don’t have a whole lot of margin for error. … We have to play well in all three phases.”
Florida’s special teams did their part in Saturday’s 44-11 win against South Carolina.
Punter Kyle Christy, who was named the Southeastern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday, set a school record by booting all seven of his punts more than 50 yards.
His average of 47.94 yards per punt this season is the best in the NCAA.
“He’s been a guy that’s flipped the field, created momentum, hung some punts up there, and our coverage was outstanding again,” Muschamp said.
Florida ranks sixth nationally by allowing only 1.85 yards per punt return.
The Gators held dynamic Gamecocks return man Ace Sanders to only 1 yard on two returns, one of which ended with Trey Burton forcing a fumble. Florida also forced a fumble on two kickoffs.
Defensive end Sharrif Floyd blocked a field goal Saturday, marking Florida’s second straight game with a blocked kick. In 20 games under Muschamp, the Gators have blocked eight kicks.
Florida credits the special teams prowess to the work of D.J. Durkin, who has been UF’s special teams coordinator since 2010.
Also critical is the emphasis the Gators place on special teams in practice, as Muschamp devotes about 25 minutes each day to special teams work.
“We’re a very invested group in our special teams as far as our staff is concerned,” Muschamp said. “What you emphasize is what’s important. We spend a lot of time on it.”
Injury update: Cornerback Cody Riggs (broken right foot) and offensive tackle Matt Patchan (strained pectoral) will both miss Saturday's game against Georgia, Muschamp said. Riggs last played against Kentucky on Sept. 22, while Patchan is yet to appear in a game this season. Wide receiver Latroy Pittman (ankle) was expected to practice on Monday, while defensive tackle Damien Jacobs will likely be out Monday before returning to practice on Tuesday. Muschamp said Jacobs is probable for Saturday's game. Jacobs left with what appeared to be a knee injury during South Carolina's second drive on Saturday and did not return.
TV schedule: CBS will use the six-day window before determining the start time for the games of Nov. 3. Missouri at Florida, Texas A&M at Mississippi State and Ole Miss at Georgia are up for selection. One will be played at 3:30 p.m. on CBS, one will be at noon on ESPN and one will be at noon on ESPN2.
