Never mind just starting again on Saturday. Greyson Lambert might have more job security than that.

As long as he keeps playing well.

A caller to Mark Richt’s radio show on Monday night asked the coach if Lambert, who started Saturday’s season opener, would be the starter the rest of the season.

“I mean, my guess is if he plays really good he’ll be the starter all the way through,” Richt said, before adding. “But you know, who knows what’ll happen. We’ll just keep playing ball and try to get the best players in the game.

“But he certainly did a nice job with his opportunities. Every ball that he threw had a good purpose. Even the ones that he threw out of bounds when there was no one open. A couple balls got batted, the rest of them were really on the money. And so I thought he did a nice job there.”

The key in Richt’s answer to the caller was “if he plays really good.” Still, it was the latest evidence that Lambert has some distance between himself and Brice Ramsey, who had been the favorite heading into the preseason.

Richt did say later in the show that it was “a close call” before Lambert was named the starter for the Louisiana-Monroe game, and that Lambert and Ramsey both played well in the game. But Lambert got all but one series in the game, completing 8-of-12 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Ramsey completed his only two pass attempts, one going for a touchdown.
