A taser was used to subdue University of Miami linebacker Gabe Terry during his arrest early Friday morning, according to a report released Tuesday by the Coral Gables Police Department.
Answering a call for an “intoxicated person,” UM police found Terry “sleeping face down on the steps” of a campus dormitory. While attempting to awaken Terry, police observed a clear bag containing marijuana hanging out the left pocket of his shorts, according to the report.
Terry, a Palm Beach Central High School graduate, was told to get up by UM police officer Carlos Castillo but “physically resisted” being handcuffed. According to Castillo’s arrest report, Terry “began to argue and pushed me away with his body.”
Terry was forced to the ground but remained “uncooperative” when another attempt was made to handcuff him. The report said the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Terry was warned “to stop struggling or he would be tased” but he got back on his feet and was shocked by UM police Sgt. Benjamin Hedrick.
Even after being shocked, Terry remained “uncooperative” by trying to get up, according to the report.
Terry, 19, was eventually handcuffed and transported to the Coral Gables Police Department where he was charged with felony possession of more than 20 grams of cannabis and resisting an officer without violence, a misdemeanor.
After spending a night in jail, Terry was released on $6,000 bond.
Following his arrest, UM announced that Terry has been indefinitely suspended from the football team. He played in seven games last season as a freshman, mostly on special teams.
Terry is set to be arraigned on May 20.
