The misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge against Florida cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy was dropped by the state attorney’s office on Thursday.

Purifoy was arrested on Feb. 6 while riding in the back seat of a car that was stopped for a right-of-way violation. The officer with the Gainesville Police Department smelled marijuana, saw a passenger throw a marijuana cigarette out of the window and found a plastic bag containing 2.5 grams of marijuana near the emergency brake between the driver’s and front passenger’s seats.

Gainesville state attorney Bill Cervone and attorney Huntley Johnson said the case was dropped because Purifoy was only near marijuana, not in possession of it.

Purifoy ranked fourth on UF with 51 tackles last season and forced a team-best three fumbles. Coach Will Muschamp said the Gators plan to use Purifoy at wide receiver during spring practice, which begins March 13. Purifoy made one catch for 5 yards last season.
